When designing this book cover, I knew I wanted the design to be simplistic. I've always appreciated book covers that are simplistic that provide elements of the story without giving away the plot. For this novel, I selected the tape image to be on the front because the main character, Kathy, has a tape that is a reoccurring object throughout the story. Not only that, but the title of the book comes from Kathy's favorite song on the tape. I selected the crinkled paper image to use for the background of the front and back cover for symbolic reasons. When children are born they come into this world with a clean slate, a blank piece of paper to write the story of their lives on. However, in this novel, these children do not have that luxury. Their futures are already determined for them and they are given the illusion of the freedom of decision. The crumpled paper symbolizes that. I chose to use the color blue for the back cover because light or pastel blue is often associated with babies and the color blue is the most commonly used color for the scrubs that doctor's and nurses wear. The cigarette image on the back cover is symbolic as well. It is another representation of the limitations and lack of freedom Kathy and her friends have. Unlike other people, they don't even have the simple choice of whether or not they want to smoke a cigarette. They can't smoke at all, even if they wanted to. Last but not least, I selected the handwriting-esque font on the front cover and spine to reflect the style of the book. The book is written in a reflective manner from the perspective of Kathy, almost like you're reading her diary or journal. So, the font is meant to represent that perspective.
